How to export a ChatGPT conversation: every way, and what each one keeps
Every way to export ChatGPT chats in 2026: the full data export, share links, PDFs and locked chats, with what each one keeps, loses, and which plans have it.

There is no button in ChatGPT that exports one chat. You can export your whole account, every conversation you have ever had, as a ZIP file that arrives by email within a week. You cannot export the one conversation you actually wanted. Somebody asked for that on OpenAI's forum in August, with a careful list of formats, and OpenAI Support replied in September: "We don't have a timeline."
So this is every way that does exist, checked on 28 October 2026 against OpenAI's own help pages, with what each one keeps, what it loses, and which plans have it. Most of the work is knowing which tool fits which job, and one of them, a share link, looks like a backup and is not.

📦 The full export, step by step
This is the official way, and the only one that gets you every conversation in a form a program can read. OpenAI's article describes it for the web like this:
1️⃣ Sign in, open your profile menu and choose Settings.
2️⃣ Choose Data controls, then Export under Export data.
3️⃣ Confirm with Confirm export.
On iOS and Android the same option lives under Data controls in the app's settings, and if the app sends you to the web instead, follow the steps above. If you cannot sign in at all, the Privacy Portal takes the same request: Make a Privacy Request, then "I have a consumer ChatGPT account", then Download my data.
Then you wait. "Exports can take up to 7 days to arrive." The email or text message has a button called Download data export, and "The download link expires 24 hours after you receive it." Download it while signed in to the same account that asked for it. If the link will not open on your phone, OpenAI suggests opening it on a computer instead, which is the help-centre way of saying phones and ZIP files have never really got on.
What arrives is a ZIP. Inside it is a file called conversations.json with your chats in it, and on big accounts "numbered conversation JSON files instead". Shared links are listed in shared_conversations.json, which the sharing article says holds "the shared-link ID, conversation ID, title, and anonymity setting". Some things are not in it: "Scheduled tasks, shared scheduled task links, and their saved snapshots are not currently included in personal account data exports."
⚠️WARNING
"An export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted." Export before a clean-up, not after.
Two plan rules are worth knowing before you need them. Self-service export is "Not available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces"; in those, your workspace owner decides. And if you are about to move a personal account into a company workspace, OpenAI says to "request, download, and check your data export before the personal workspace is removed", because afterwards the old export link may stop working.
🔍 Check the ZIP before you trust it
OpenAI's own instruction is the right one: "Open the ZIP file and check that it contains the conversations you need." People who did check have found gaps. One user who analysed an export of 1,761 conversations reported that "97 files referenced in library-files.json are missing from the exported ZIP", some of them files they had uploaded. Others on the forum describe exports that never arrived, or ZIPs that would not open. None of this means the export is broken for you. It means the ZIP deserves the same suspicion as any backup you have never restored.
conversations.json is not pleasant to read by eye. It is built for programs, and every message carries the bookkeeping of a branching conversation. If you just want to search it, a text editor will do. If you want ChatGPT in another account to remember it, OpenAI has an article for uploading the file into a new conversation, with a frank list of what that does not do, starting with "Merge two ChatGPT accounts" and ending with "Restore your original chat sidebar." It is a reference file, not a migration. If you are moving to Claude instead, I wrote up what moves and what does not.
🔗 A share link is a snapshot, not a backup
Share is the fastest way to get one conversation out of ChatGPT and in front of somebody else: open the chat, choose Share, then Create link or Copy link. Links start with https://chatgpt.com/share/, and they are "anonymous by default", although OpenAI notes that some older sharing experiences show the creator's name, so look at the preview.
What a link is not is a copy you own. From a personal account it holds "the content available when the link is created or updated. Messages added later are not included automatically." You refresh it with Update link. And it lives only as long as the original does: "Deleting a conversation removes its shared conversation link", and "Shared conversation links are deleted when their creator deletes the account."
Links from Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces behave differently: only members of the same workspace can open them, and they can include messages added after sharing. So a work chat sent to a friend outside the company will not open for them, however brilliant the prompt.
You can find and delete every link you have made under Settings, Data controls, Shared links, which is worth a look once a year, the way you check which apps still have access to your email.
🖨️ One chat, by hand
For a single conversation as a document, the honest options are the browser's Print to PDF and plain copy and paste. Both work on short chats. On long ones, the August feature request put the problems precisely: "Printing the conversation to PDF may produce blank or incomplete pages", and "Selecting and copying the entire conversation may omit parts of the text because older messages are loaded dynamically."
It has got worse for very long chats. A user who archives conversations with a paid full-page capture tool reported on 6 October that messages "that were previously displayed disappear again. In their place, large white/empty areas sometimes appear." If your chat is long, scroll slowly through it before printing, then check the PDF page by page before you delete anything.
Two kinds of output do have proper exports. A deep research report has "Download as PDF" under the share icon, added for Plus, Pro and Team in May 2025, which gives you a PDF "complete with tables, images, linked citations, and sources." And a deck made with ChatGPT Slides, new this month for Pro, Business and Enterprise, can be exported "to PowerPoint, PDF, or Google Slides" on the web.
The last option is to ask ChatGPT itself to turn the conversation into a document: the decisions, the final code, the parts you would hate to lose. That is not a transcript and it will paraphrase, so read it, but for most chats the summary is the part worth keeping anyway. Nobody has ever reopened a ninety-message conversation to admire message forty-three.
🔒 Locked chats are hidden, not saved
On 20 October OpenAI started rolling out locked chats, which hide chosen conversations behind a four-digit PIN. It is a privacy feature for shared screens and borrowed laptops, and the help page is careful about what it is not: it does not "create end-to-end encryption or a separate encrypted vault".
It also adds a new way to lose a conversation. In bold, on OpenAI's page: "Resetting your account PIN permanently deletes all locked chats". Forget the PIN and reset it, and those chats are gone, and "OpenAI Support cannot recover the deleted content." A locked chat cannot be shared either, since "You cannot archive, pin, move, or share a locked chat." The help pages do not say whether locked chats are included in the data export. If you lock anything important, run an export and look for it in the ZIP.
💡TIP
Write your PIN down somewhere that is not a locked chat.
🗂️ Keeping the parts that matter
A data export is a fine archive and a poor notebook. If what you want from a conversation is the plan, the answer or the snippet you will need again, the useful copy is a page you can find, search and send to someone, not a ZIP file you will never open.
That is what I built Sumibako for, so take this paragraph with the appropriate pinch of salt. You can paste the useful part of a chat into a page and publish it with a link. ChatGPT can write pages into it directly too, but only where OpenAI allows custom plugins to write, which is Business, Enterprise and Edu; on other plans they are read-only or not available. Claude can write into it on every plan, which is one more reason people switch.
Whichever you choose, do the export once now, while you remember your password, your PIN and which email address you signed up with. Future you will be grateful, and future you has historically been very hard to please.
